How Far Back Does QuickBooks Online Bank Feed Go?

By SimpleBankConvertPublished October 17, 2026

How far back a QuickBooks Online bank feed goes depends on your bank. Intuit says the first download reaches anywhere from 90 days to 24 months, and 90 days is the floor to plan around. Anything older than your bank's window has to come in from a statement or a downloaded file instead.

How much history does a new bank feed connection pull?

A new bank feed connection pulls whatever history your bank agrees to send, which Intuit puts at 90 days up to 24 months. QuickBooks does not set that number, and nothing on the setup screen tells you which end of the range your bank sits at. You find out after the first download.

Intuit's page on connecting bank and credit card accounts gives the range and the setup flow. On the date range step, the list offers preset choices, and a Custom option lets you type any date. Intuit's video for that page shows the beginning of the year as the suggested choice.

To learn your own bank's window, connect the account and then sort the register by date. The oldest line the feed brought in marks the edge. Compare it with the date you typed:

  • If the oldest line matches your date, the bank had history to spare.
  • If the oldest line is later than your date, you have hit the bank's limit.

QuickBooks Desktop has its own, separate limits. Intuit's Desktop page on downloading Bank Feed transactions says most banks give about 90 days through Direct Connect and some give up to a year. Do not mix the two products' numbers when you plan.

Why the feed start date you pick is only a ceiling

The feed start date sets the earliest day QuickBooks will accept, not the earliest day your bank will deliver. Choosing a date two years back does not make a 90-day bank send two years. You get the shorter of the two spans, and the screen gives no warning when the bank falls short.

That is why people are often surprised after the first sync. They choose January 1 in October, expecting ten months, and see only July onward. The feed is working. The bank simply stopped at its own limit. If you want to understand the start date in more depth, including whether you can change it after connecting, read changing the bank feed start date in QuickBooks Online.

Does reconnecting a bank feed bring back older history?

Reconnecting a bank feed does not reach further back than the first connection could. Intuit's disconnect article says transactions older than 90 days cannot be downloaded from the bank when you reconnect. A reconnect can also download recent lines a second time, so it often adds work rather than history.

The source for that limit is Intuit's guide to disconnecting accounts connected to online banking. It points to the manual upload for anything older, which is the same route described in the last section of this post.

If a reconnect seems like the answer because new lines have stopped arriving, the problem is usually the connection, not the window. Start with QuickBooks not downloading bank transactions, which works through sign-in, bank-side changes and lines hiding in the wrong tab.

Bank feed start dates that overlap entries you already made

A bank feed start date that is earlier than your last entered transaction pulls in lines you already have. QuickBooks will try to match some of them, but anything it cannot match sits in For review looking new. Accept those without care and the account balance doubles up.

The overlap usually comes from one of these:

  • You typed deposits and payments by hand for the first few weeks, then connected the feed with a start date at the beginning of the month.
  • You uploaded a statement file for the same period before connecting.
  • You imported customer payments against invoices, and the deposits for those payments are now arriving from the bank as well. Importing payments into QuickBooks Online against invoices explains how those payments should match the bank deposit instead of sitting beside it.

The safe rule is to start the feed the day after the newest transaction already in the account. Earlier history, if you need it, comes in from files where you control every date.

Filling the months before the bank feed window from files

The months before the bank feed window come in through Upload from file on the Bank transactions page, using a CSV or QBO file. Most banks let you download a file for older months, and most keep statement PDFs online for several years. Upload the older period first, then let the feed carry on from its own start date.

Here is a worked example with example dates. A business connects its checking account on 15 October 2026 and wants the books to start on 1 January 2026.

Period Source Example result
1 Jan to 16 Jul 2026 Statement files, uploaded month by month Six and a half months filled from files
17 Jul to 15 Oct 2026 First feed download, about 90 days Arrives in For review on connection
16 Oct 2026 onward Nightly feed downloads Arrives each day

The seam between the file and the feed is where mistakes hide. Check the last uploaded line against the first feed line, then compare the QuickBooks balance at the end of 16 July with the running balance the July statement shows for that day.

The same window applies to cards. When you connect a credit card to QuickBooks Online, expect the issuer to set its own limit, and plan the same file-plus-feed split.

If the older months exist only as PDF statements, they need converting before the upload will take them. SimpleBankConvert is being built to read a statement PDF and give back a CSV or QBO file for that upload screen.
