> Transactions imported to the wrong account in QuickBooks? Move what is in For Review, undo what was added and import the file again to the right account.
When transactions are imported to the wrong account in QuickBooks, fix them in two groups. Lines still in For review can be excluded from the wrong account. Lines you already added need Undo first, then exclude. After that, upload the same file again and pick the right account in the QuickBooks account dropdown before you continue.

## How can you tell transactions were imported to the wrong account?

Transactions imported to the wrong account usually give themselves away within a day. The account tile shows a balance that no longer matches the bank, the For review count jumps on an account you did not touch, or familiar payees turn up under a card or savings account where they make no sense.

Look for these signs, roughly in the order people notice them:

- **The tile balance is off.** The QuickBooks balance on the Bank transactions page drifts away from the bank balance by about the total of the file you uploaded.
- **The payees do not fit.** Your landlord and payroll provider show up on the business credit card. Grocery runs show up on the loan account.
- **The other account is short.** The account the file was meant for has a gap of exactly the dates the file covered.
- **The signs look reversed.** A card file in a checking account turns charges into withdrawals and payments into deposits, which reads oddly but not always obviously wrong.

That last point overlaps with a different problem. If the account is right but money in and money out have swapped, [deposits imported as withdrawals in QuickBooks](/blog/deposits-imported-as-withdrawals-in-quickbooks) covers the sign fix. Before you start moving lines, confirm which account each line really belongs to by checking the account number on the statement or download the file came from.

## Clearing wrong-account lines still waiting in For review

Lines still in For review have not reached your books, so they are the easy group. Select them on the wrong account's For review tab and exclude them. Nothing in the register changes, because those lines were never added, and the tile's For review count drops back.

The steps on the web version of QuickBooks Online:

1. Go to All apps, then Accounting, then Bank transactions.
2. Select the tile for the wrong account.
3. Open the For review tab, which some screens label Pending.
4. Tick the checkbox for each line from the bad upload. Sorting by date helps you catch exactly the file's date range.
5. Select Exclude.

The excluded lines move to the Excluded tab. If you exclude one too many, Intuit's page on [fixing duplicate transactions in QuickBooks Online](https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/help-article/duplicate-transactions/fix-duplicate-transactions-quickbooks-online-bank-feeds/L1fjxl88f_US_en_US) gives the way back: tick it on the Excluded tab and select Undo.

Why exclude rather than delete? The same page explains that once a line is added or excluded, QuickBooks stops the bank from sending it again. On an account with a live feed, a deleted line can come back. On an account you only fill by upload, the difference is smaller, but excluding is still the cautious habit.

## Added lines in the wrong bank account: undo first, then exclude

Lines you already added from the wrong account are real entries in that register. You cannot exclude them directly. Undo each one on the Categorized tab so it returns to For review, then exclude it there. The entry QuickBooks created is removed, and the bank line is parked on the Excluded tab.

1. On the wrong account's tile, open the Categorized tab (or Posted).
2. For each line from the bad upload, select the link in the Added or Matched column, then select Undo.
3. Go back to For review. The undone lines are waiting there.
4. Tick them and select Exclude.

Matched lines need a moment of thought. If a line in the wrong account was matched to an invoice payment or a bill payment, the undo leaves that payment in place but frees it. Once the file is uploaded to the right account, the same line can match the same payment there. The duplicate-transactions article notes that if you cannot exclude a line because it is part of another transaction, you undo its match first.

### A worked example

Here is an example of six lines that were uploaded to a savings account when they belonged to checking. The payees, dates and amounts are made up.

| Example line | Status in savings | Action |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 05/02, RENT - MAPLE PROPERTIES, -1,850.00 | Added to Rent | Undo, then exclude |
| 05/05, CUSTOMER DEPOSIT, 2,400.00 | Matched to an invoice payment | Undo the match, then exclude |
| 05/09, ELECTRIC CO, -212.44 | For review | Exclude |
| 05/14, PAYROLL SERVICE, -3,105.70 | For review | Exclude |
| 05/20, CARD PAYMENT, -640.00 | Added as a transfer to the card | Undo, then exclude |
| 05/28, INTEREST PAID, 0.31 | Added to Interest income, and it really is savings interest | Leave it |

The last row is the reminder to read each line rather than clear the whole date range blind. A mixed-up upload sometimes lands next to a few genuine lines that belong where they are.

## Uploading the file again to the right QuickBooks account

The account choice happens on the upload screen, after you pick the file and before you map columns. In the QuickBooks account dropdown, select the account the file belongs to. If that account does not exist yet, add it from the same dropdown. Then finish the upload and review the lines in that account.

Intuit's steps for [manually uploading transactions into QuickBooks Online](https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/help-article/import-transactions/manually-upload-transactions-quickbooks-online/L0rE9OXBz_US_en_US) run like this:

1. Go to All apps, then Accounting, then Bank transactions.
2. If you see a tile for the account you want, select it.
3. Select the Link account dropdown, then Upload from file.
4. Drag in or select the same file you used before.
5. In the QuickBooks account dropdown, select the right account.
6. Map the columns if it is a CSV, choose the lines to import and finish.

Starting from the right tile in step 2 is a cheap habit, but the dropdown is what decides. Read the account name in it before you select Continue, and compare the last four digits with the statement.

Once the lines are in the right For review list, check the dates as well as the account. A file made from a December statement can carry January lines stamped with the wrong year, and the fix is different. [Imported transactions with the wrong year in QuickBooks](/blog/imported-transactions-have-the-wrong-year-in-quickbooks) explains how that happens and how to correct it before you add anything.

## Why does a credit card file in a checking account look so wrong?

A credit card file in a checking account looks wrong because the two account types read the same line in opposite ways. On a card account, a charge raises what you owe. In checking, that line reads as money leaving the bank, and card payments read as deposits. The totals still look plausible, so it goes unnoticed.

Two clues give it away. The checking balance drops by the card's monthly spend, and the card account in QuickBooks shows no activity for the month. Clear the checking account with the steps above, then upload the file into the card account.

Watch one line in particular: the payment from checking to the card. It appears in both files, once as money out of checking and once as a payment on the card. Record it once as a transfer between the two accounts, and match the other side to that transfer rather than adding it again.

If you use QuickBooks Desktop, the wrong-account problem shows up differently, because Web Connect remembers which account a bank file was linked to. [Changing the Web Connect account in QuickBooks Desktop](/blog/change-web-connect-account-in-quickbooks-desktop) covers breaking and resetting that link.

## When the wrong account has already been reconciled

A reconciled line is one you have ticked off against a statement. If you reconciled the wrong account after the bad import, undoing those lines changes a balance that reconciliation relied on. The next reconciliation will start from a beginning balance that no longer agrees, and you will need to reconcile that period again.

Intuit's page on [fixing accounts you reconciled in the past](https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/help-article/statement-reconciliation/fix-issues-accounts-reconciled-past-quickbooks/L8lx6PQQ5_US_en_US) lists edited, deleted, moved and unreconciled transactions as causes of a beginning balance that is off. It says the primary admin or an accountant can undo a reconciliation from the History by account screen. The safest order is:

1. Undo the reconciliation for the affected period in the wrong account.
2. Undo and exclude the wrong lines as described above.
3. Upload the file to the right account and add or match the lines.
4. Reconcile both accounts again for that period.

If the period is already closed for taxes or covered by a filed return, ask your accountant before changing it.

## A pre-upload account check for the next import file

Most wrong-account imports start with a file whose name says nothing, such as "statement (3).csv", picked from a downloads folder that holds four accounts. A ten-second check before the upload saves an hour of undo work afterwards.

Before you select Continue on the account screen, confirm:

- The file name names the account. Rename downloads to something like "checking-4417-2026-05.csv" as soon as you save them.
- The last four digits on the source statement match the account you picked.
- The first and last dates in the file sit where you expect, with no overlap with lines already in that account.
- The account type fits the file. A card file goes to a credit card account, not to checking.

If you would rather connect the bank than upload files, the feed picks the account for you once it is set up. [Downloading bank transactions into QuickBooks Online](/blog/how-to-download-bank-transactions-into-quickbooks-online) compares that route with uploads. If you work from PDF statements, SimpleBankConvert is being built to give you one file per statement, so the account and period are clear before you upload.
